About Christian Garbis

Christian Garbis is a lecturer, writer, and experimental filmmaker, born and raised near Boston, Massachusetts. He received his BA in English and Certificate in Film Studies from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He earned his Masters degree in Creative Writing from Lesley University. He is the author of three blogs and has been contributing to the Armenian Weekly since 1994. His work has also appeared in Roads and Kingdoms and Hetq Online. Garbis teaches writing courses at the American University of Armenia. 

He lives part of the year in Yerevan, Armenia and maintains two blogs about his experiences there: Notes From Hairenik and Footprints Armenia.

Garbis has developed a yet-unproduced screenplay for a feature film about the political spectrum of the U.S. called "The Continental Revolution."   

His first novel, titled "A World Without Wings," is complete and awaits representation.

His short story "A Disintegrating Mind," which was adapted from the novel, made the Top 25 list in Glimmer Train's December 2012 Fiction Open. In 1994, his short story appeared in Spectrum, an annually published magazine of arts and literature printed by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. 

He has made a number of short films, one of which, titled “The Dance,” premiered at the first annual Five-College Film Festival held in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1994. Another work, “Carriage of Dreams,” was debuted at the Third Annual AFFMA Film Festival held in September 2000 in Hollywood, California. 

Literary influences include: William Faulkner, Theodore Dreiser, William Dean Howells, William Saroyan, James Joyce, W. Somerset Maugham, William Shakespeare, Vladamir Nabokov, Christopher Hitchens.

Cinematic influences include: Woody Allen, Atom Egoyan, Spike Lee, Ingmar Bergman, Artavasd Peleshian, Akira Kurosawa, Sergei Parajanov, Krzysztof Kieślowski, David Lynch, Luchino Visconti, Federico Fellini, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, Orson Welles.
